Tribal of Andaman

The Andaman Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, are home to several indigenous tribes, each with unique cultures, languages, and ways of life. Here are some of the prominent tribes:

1. Sentinelese: One of the most isolated tribes in the world, the Sentinelese live on North Sentinel Island. They reject contact with outsiders and are known for their hostility towards intruders. Their way of life remains largely unchanged, relying on hunting, gathering, and fishing.

2. Onge: The Onge inhabit Little Andaman Island. They are semi-nomadic and primarily engage in fishing, hunting, and gathering. Unlike the Sentinelese, the Onge have had some limited contact with outsiders and have integrated some modern practices.

3. Jarawa: The Jarawa tribe resides along the western coast of Middle and South Andaman Islands. They traditionally lived a nomadic lifestyle, hunting and gathering in the forests. While they have had some contact with the outside world, they continue to maintain their traditional ways.

4. Great Andamanese: Once a large tribe, the Great Andamanese population has drastically declined due to diseases and loss of land. They were traditionally sea nomads, and efforts have been made to revive their language and culture through contact and rehabilitation programs.

5. Shompens: The Shompens live on Great Nicobar Island. They are semi-nomadic and primarily depend on hunting, gathering, and fishing. They have had limited contact with outsiders, which has helped them preserve aspects of their traditional lifestyle.

These tribes are protected by law, and contact with them is heavily regulated to preserve their cultures and ways of life. The Indian government aims to protect their lands and ensure their survival in the face of modern challenges.
