Transportation in Andaman
Transportation in Andaman
Transportation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands primarily relies on a mix of air, sea, and road services. Here’s an overview of the different modes of transportation available:
1. Air Travel
- Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport: The main gateway to the Andaman Islands, located in the capital city, Port Blair. Regular flights connect Port Blair to major Indian cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
- Inter-island flights: Some smaller islands have helicopter services that connect with Port Blair, especially for urgent travel or medical emergencies. Pawan Hans Helicopter Service operates in the region.
2. Sea Transport
- Ferries: Ferries are a crucial part of transportation between the islands. They are run by the Directorate of Shipping Services and private operators. The main ferry routes are between Port Blair and popular tourist destinations like Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep), Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), and Ross Island.
- Government Ferries: These are more economical and connect various islands. However, they can be slower and less comfortable than private options.
- Private Ferries: Faster and more comfortable, with air-conditioned seating options. Private operators include Makruzz, Green Ocean, and Sea Link.
- Passenger Ships: Ships also connect Port Blair to mainland cities like Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam. These services take much longer (2-3 days) but are more affordable and are mainly used by local residents.
3. Road Transport
- Port Blair and South Andaman: Roads are relatively well-developed in the capital city of Port Blair and nearby areas. Taxis, auto-rickshaws, and buses are the primary means of transport. Renting two-wheelers or bicycles is also popular among tourists.
- Inter-Island Roads: The Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) connects Port Blair to Diglipur in the North Andaman region. However, travel along the ATR is restricted due to environmental protection concerns in certain areas like the Jarawa Reserve.
4. Island-Specific Transport
- Havelock (Swaraj Dweep): Besides ferries, auto-rickshaws, bicycles, motorbikes, and rental cars are common forms of transport for exploring the island.
- Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): Small and easily navigable by bicycle or on foot, though taxis and rickshaws are available.
- Baratang and North Andaman: Baratang, known for its limestone caves and mangroves, is accessible via road and ferries. The area beyond Baratang toward North Andaman (like Rangat, Mayabunder, and Diglipur) is serviced by buses and private cars.
5. Speed Boats
For short distances between islands or to explore specific tourist spots like mangroves small motorboats are available.
6. Scooty
These can be rented, especially on the smaller islands, where tourists prefer to explore at their own pace.
